Many people are often concerned about obtaining health insurance. They are confused about their options or about how to obtain the best health insurance for them or their family. There are several ways to obtain health insurance, though, and some of them are not always obvious, but can be quite easy in the end.
Health insurance is commonly obtained through an employer. Nearly all employers these days offer some sort of “group” health insurance plan for employees. The term “group” simply denotes that there is a large group of people on the plan, which decreases the cost of the monthly premium for all members. These plans can cover yourself, your spouse, and your family, depending on the specific policy. Covering more than just yourself obviously increases your monthly premium, but the ability to cover your family inexpensively is a huge benefit. To obtain group health insurance through your employer, you should contact your human resources department or whoever is in charge of benefits in your company. You should be able to buy into the group health insurance plan at any time during your employment. (more…)
You’ve got a hot date, an important job interview, a sales meeting with a key prospect, and staring back at you in the mirror is an ulcerous cold sore planted on your lip. Of all the skin problems, cold sores are often the most dreaded. Why do people hate them so much?
1. They’re contagious. You can forget about kissing your date good night. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, which spreads through contact. Even worse, you’re infectious before you even have a sore, so you might unwittingly spread it then. Even touching your cold sore with your hand and then touching someone can distribute the infection. Sharing a drink can spread the virus, too.
2. They’re painful. Your mouth hurts, and some people get a sore throat as well. The herpes simplex virus even makes some people feel as if they’re getting the flu, with headaches, fever, nausea and dizziness.
3. They’re ugly. Unlike a pimple that you might hide with makeup or brushing your bangs forward, the usual tricks won’t hide the weeping ulcer that forms and then crusts over. If you try to hide it with lipstick, you’ve just infected the entire tube.
4. They’re long-lasting. It typically takes from nine days to two weeks before the cold sore is gone. Even after the sore has healed, the reddish area can still shed the virus for a few more days.
5. They’re often recurrent. Just when you think they’re gone, they’re back. Herpes simplex has two varieties, HSV-1 and HSV-2, the first type remaining latent in the body.
Cold sores do go away or go dormant by themselves, but there are a few things you can do to speed relief. Docosanol is a topical solution approved for cold sores; zinc oxide or zinc sulfate can help if applied promptly. Acyclovir and penciclovir can cut 10% from your healing time. Compeed is another alternative that comes in an invisible patch that camouflages as it heals. Remedies in pill form include famciclovir and valaciclovir.
